Bone grafting is a chairside minor surgiucal procedure by which new bone is added in the areas of the jaw that have the teeth. It helps restore the bone to its healthy form following bone loss due to various factors like gum diseases or trauma or tooth loss.
When does one need this?
When the bone height or width of the patient is not enough for placing implants. when there has been a lot of bone loss due to varied reasons like gum diseases, accidents, tooth loss (naturally or after extraction). In all these cases, the bone height or width is built up and the bone form and function is restored using various bone substitues by this method called bone grafting.
How long does it take?
Bone grafting is generally done in one sitting and it takes 3-6 months for complete healing.
