What is TMJ Disorder
The Temporomandibular joint that connects our jaw to the skull. any problem with this joint is referred to as a TMJ Disorder. Here, the patient expiriences pain in the joint of the jaw and in the muscles that help in the jaw movement. This can be on one side or both the sides.
What are the causes of this?
There can be a wide number of causes responsible for this disorder. it can be due to irregularly positioned teeth, incorrect relation of the jaws, trauma to the jaws as a result of a fall or an accident, constant grinding of the teeth unknowingly (bruxism), stress, incorrect dentures/crowns/bridges that disrupt the occlusion, arthritis or even genetic.
How would one know he/she is suffering from a TMJ Disorder?
If a patient suffers from TMJ disorder, he/she will have a pain or a click at the jaw joint, earpain, a clicking noise heard in the ears,headache and pain in the temples or pain in the jaw muscles characterised by difficulty in chewing food.
How is this treated?
A device called a TMJ splint is prescribed to the patient which is to be worn by the patient and it helps reduce the pain and solve the patients problem. A few medicines are also prescribed to reduce the pain and inflammation.
How much time will it take?
It generally takes 2 appointments. One to take the impression and the other to deliver the splint.
