Cavities are a tiny hole on the hard surface of the teeth. Cavities are primarily caused by bacteria present on the surface of the teeth. Streptococcus mutans is the main culprit that is responsible for teeth cavities. Cavity causes plaque which is sticky film on the teeth. Plaque removes all nutrients from the teeth and causes in its decay. It gradually attacks on the innermost layer of the teeth- the enamel and results in decay of the nutrients from the teeth. If the treatment of teeth cavities is not taken care of, it can ruin the entire set of teeth. Here are a few tips that can ensure your teeth remains cavity-free:
- Brush your teeth regularly
The best way to keep your teeth cavity–free is by brushing your teeth regularly and properly. Brush your teeth twice every day, without fail. Night time brushing is particularly crucial because it cleans the food that gets stuck on the teeth throughout the day. Letting bacteria feed on your teeth the entire night allows acid to damage the teeth. While brushing, ensure that the gums and teeth are cleaned properly. Use nice and gentle strokes on teeth and avoid scrubbing the teeth.
- Brush with fluoride
Fluoride helps significantly in preventing cavities on teeth. It also provides essential minerals to the teeth. According to the study, it has been proved that regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste prevents tooth decay.
- Use the right brush
Using a fancy and motorized brush is not needed to get a healthy pair of teeth. Ensure that the brush you use have soft bristles that are not harsh on teeth. Make sure to change your brush every three months. After brushing your teeth, rinse it dry as wet brush can be the breeding ground for bacteria.
- Avoid sugary, sticky snacks
Feeding on a bag of candy can cause damage to your teeth beyond knowledge. Sticky and sugary snacks allow acids to form inside your mouth that wears away the enamel.
- Quit smoking
Smoking causes multiple damages on health. Apart from carrying the risk of causing cancer, smoking dulls your smile and causes cavities. Toxic substances present in cigarettes forms acids inside the teeth that cause cavities.
- Visit your dentist regularly
It is recommended to visit the dentist at least twice a year. Cavities develop and progress at a fast pace, thereby causing extensive damage to the teeth. Ignoring cavities can even be detrimental for the nervous system and may even cause oral cancer.
- Consume Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for oral health and helps to absorb calcium and phosphate from the food we eat. Consuming Vitamin D rich foods like yogurt and milk is beneficial to oral health. Sunlight is also a great source of Vitamin D.
Resorting to these methods will however not fix the existing cavities inside the mouth. They are useful in ensuring you do not get affected by cavity forming bacteria inside the mouth. Make sure to visit the dentist as soon as a cavity is detected.
