Ever got bothered by the spacing in between your teeth. This is a small article in which I’m going to explain ways in which gaps in between teeth can be closed.
Spaces in between teeth can look aesthetically compromised. These spaces may be natural or can be due to cavity . If the spaces are due to cavities then closure of cavities via filling can result in closure of space. But if the gaps are due to natural spacing in between teeth then it can be corrected by doing treatment. In this article I’ll be focussing on gaps due to natural positioning of teeth and what are the options available to close them.
To close the gaps the treatment options available are to close them by braces treatment or by giving crowns over the teeth.
Let’s focus on braces treatment first. Also known as orthodontic treatment , braces are small metallic pieces which are placed over the teeth in such a way that the forced exerted by wire moves the teeth in specified position. Braces remain fixed over the teeth for few months. Every month patient has to visit once for necessary adjustment of wires. After the braces are removed a fixed or removable retainer is given to patient to be worn for few months.
Well the fact that wearing of fixed wires for a certain duration of time may have given our readers jitters. But the good news is there are invisible braces available too which are called as INVIALIGN. Sounds interesting right? These invisible braces are set of plastic trays that are to be worn for 14 days and are totally removable. But wearing of each set of tray for atleast 22 hours a day is recommended. It should be removed only while brushing and while having food. Hygienic enough? Yes they are.
Coming down to other option to close the gaps. It is done via crowns. Crowns are basically caps placed over teeth. The main idea behind doing crowns to close gaps is when patient wants to get the gaps closed quickly, like within few days or few weeks. Or if they are not patient enough to wear wires for an extended duration of time. But patient must know that for placement of crowns the tooth needs to be shortened by 1.5 to 2mm from all sides and this process is irreversible. But nevertheless if done properly a quick result can be achieved in very short duration of time.
