Teeth cleaning, also known as Scaling or Oral prophylaxis, primarily involve the removal of debris or food particles stuck in between, over teeth surface or corners of the teeth in order to prevent tooth decay or gum disease.
The process involves the use of ultrasonic tips that vibrates at a high frequency which helps in removing loose & soft deposits i.e. plaque and hard food deposits or tartar i.e. calculus. Food debris may impart discoloration to the teeth. Scaling also gives relief from bad breath.
Scaling also removes extrinsic stains which are usually food color stains like that of tea or coffee, red wine, turmeric, or tobacco stains caused due to smoking or chewing any form of tobacco. Scaling does not whiten your teeth but helps to get back your natural teeth shade.
The procedure also involves polishing teeth with pumice paste. This helps in reducing the roughness caused during scaling and makes the tooth surface smooth.
When and how often should one get scaling done?
You should get your scaling done at least once a year or once in 6 months, and specifically when,
- Your gums are inflamed i.e. red or swollen
- When your gums bleed during brushing or flossing
- When spaces or pockets between teeth & gums are formed
- When you have persistent bad breath which does not go away even after brushing, tongue cleaning & flossing
