Avoid brushing near the wound for 24 hours, rinse gently with salt water after two days, stick to a soft-food diet, and take prescribed antibiotics and painkillers as directed to support smooth healing
Marsupialization relieves internal pressure, supporting new bone growth and safeguarding adjacent vital anatomy like nerves or sinus walls. It's especially useful for large cysts or in young patients where less invasive methods are preferred.
Typically, surgeons choose between enucleation (complete removal of the cyst in one procedure) or marsupialization/decompression, which shrinks larger cysts gradually before complete removal. The choice depends on size, location, and proximity to vital structures.
Bone remodeling after enucleation can take 6 to 12 months, while cyst size often reduces significantly within 3–4 months following marsupialization.
In cases of significant bone loss, bone grafting may be performed either during or after cyst removal to support jaw strength and healing, although many cyst cavities regenerate naturally.
Yes—regardless of the technique used, the removed tissue is always sent for biopsy to confirm diagnosis and rule out aggressive or malignant lesions.
