Most of us have the concept of dental implants , when is it done, why is it done and other questions related to it. Today we are going to discuss as to why a bone graft is required while placing dental implants.
WHAT IS BONE GRAFTING?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure in which bone is either taken from patients own body or from body of genetically different species and is used to fill or repair the bone defect at the required site so as to repair and heal the area making it conducive to receive dental implant.
TYPES OF GRAFT?
- Autograft : graft material harvested from patient’s own body.
- Allograft : graft material derived from other individual of same species
- Xenograft: graft material derived from other species
- synthetic bone grafts : hydroxyapatite or bone glass
WHEN IS A BONE GRAFT REQUIRED?
Grafts are placed at site of implant if there is a preexisting defects due to infection or erosion or any other reasons that may include trauma, cysts, benign or malignant tumors, developmental defects resulting in deficient volume of bone. To assess the volume and density of bone a CBCT scan is preferred imaging choice as it presents a 3D picture of bone in the area of choice for implant placement.
