Teeth are the hardest structure of our body. The development of teeth and its arrangement in the mouth (characteristic arrangement, kind, number) all is referred under the broad spectrum of dentition.
Humans have two sets of teeth from which we develop four different types throughout the span of life, these two sets are –
- Primary teeth– are also known as milk teeth. This set of teeth starts its formation during embryo phase and erupt during infancy (6 months to 12years approximately). Generally there are 20 primary teeth on each dental arch 10 on each dental arch : 4 incisors( 2 central and 2 lateral) , 2 canines, 4molars.
- Permanent teeth – it is also known as the adult teeth, it is the second set of teeth and normally consists of 32 teeth.
The first permanent teeth appears around the age of 6years, up to 13 years of age 28 of the 32 permanent teeth will appear, the third molars or the wisdom teeth, usually appear between 17-25 years.
Different types of teeth –
- Incisors– most visible type of teeth among all the types, it has single root providing high aesthetic role. As they appear on the front of the mouth, they have sharp biting surface. Incisors are of again 2 types i.e. central incisors (located in the front part of the jaws normally along the midline of the face) while the lateral incisors located between the central incisors and the canines. The incisors are responsible for cutting and shearing of food into small pieces during mastication and they aid in verbal pronunciation.
- Canines – strongest of all the types and it is present as 2 on the upper jaw and 2 on the lower jaw. Located between anterior (incisors) and posterior (premolars and molars) teeth, they lie in a place where the dental archer’s curves lie. The canines have single root .the canines can withstand tremendous lateral pressure so it is actively used in chewing.
- Premolars– the premolar teeth are called transitional teeth located between canines and molar teeth. Premolars have properties of both anterior canines and posterior molars. They have two cusps each. The upper premolars have two roots, while all the others have single roots. The primary function of it is tearing and grinding food during chewing.
- Molars– the most posterior and the most complicated kind of teeth normally adults have 12 molars in groups of 4 having 3 molars in each of them, at the back of the mouth. They aid in the mastication of the food.
