What is Teeth Sensitivity?
Teeth sensitivity or in the language of a dentist, dentinal hypersensitivity is a condition where the protective layer on the tooth surface (enamel) wears off, exposing the tooh nerves which react to hot and cold responses. When a patient suffers from teeth sensitivity, it is classically characterised by a sudden wince/unpleasent sensation to any hot or cold food or drinks or sometimes even air.
What are the causes of teeth sensitivity?
The prime reason that results in this is the wearing off of the protective enamel layer on the tooth. This exposes the inner layer (dentin) that has the nerves and hence, the tooth becomes sensitive. this wearing off can be due to many factors like applying excessive pressure while brushing, cavities or fracture of the tooth due to trauma. even gum recession exposes the root of the tooth and results in sensitivity.
