Post-Wisdom Tooth Removal – What To Expect For A Quick Healing

Although having your wisdom teeth out is a significant dental procedure, the healing process itself may be somewhat of an expedition.

For those of us at Aesthetica, we are aware that this procedure entails a mixture of anxiety, excitement, and curiosity about at last returning to normal—minus the extra teeth!

You probably want to know how long it will be before you can resume eating solid foods after your operation. Will it hurt?

To ensure a speedy and comfortable healing process following wisdom tooth extraction, take a seat back, unwind, and allow us to guide you through each stage of the process. Following the right expert guidance and being patient will allow you to quickly resume your favorite foods and activities.

Right After Extraction: The Initial Hours

After your wisdom teeth are extracted, our team makes sure you’re comfortable by covering the extraction sites with gauze packs to control bleeding and promote the formation of blood clots, which is an essential first step in the healing process. Keep extra gauze packs on, available for the first few hours following your surgery in case these need to be replaced if they get wet.

Feeling discomfort as the anesthesia wears off is natural. It’s important to manage this pain; therefore, use the recommended pain management techniques and drink plenty of water and other clear liquids to stay hydrated.

For the first 24 hours, avoid having Hot food or drinks. Both using a straw and spitting violently might cause blood clots to come loose and make it more difficult for you to recover.

From the 2nd Day, after 24 hours have passed, use warm saline to rinse your mouth and feel fresh.

The First Few Days: Reducing Pain And Swelling

Give rest top priority during the first one to three days following extraction. Steer clear of strenuous exercise and heavy lifting, as these activities may exacerbate bleeding or swelling. If you observe some puffiness, don’t worry; swelling and mild bruising are common around the cheeks and jaw.

Soft meals like pudding, applesauce, and mashed potatoes can be added at this point. These are simple to consume and won’t interfere with the healing process. Usually reaching their peak around this time, pain and discomfort should begin to subside after day three.

To control swelling, apply an ice pack intermittently throughout the day and adhere to whatever pain management strategies your doctor prescribes.

Moving Past Day Three: Transitioning To Routine

You should start to feel better about the third day when the discomfort and swelling start to go down. Although it’s still recommended to avoid firm or crunchy meals at this point, you’re getting closer to typical eating habits. Take into account choices such as cooked veggies, rice, and soft pasta.

Brushing close to the extraction site can also be resumed, but proceed with caution. You can resume brushing your other teeth as usual, and you can avoid food or plaque buildup around the extraction site by using a soft, gentle brush.

After a Week: Getting Back Your Comfort

You should feel much better by the end of the first week, and most of the discomfort should be gone. Softer solid foods can now be incorporated into your diet, but avoid crunchy or spicy foods since the extraction site may still be uncomfortable.

Although it’s advisable to check with your dentist, many patients find that it’s safe to start brushing and flossing gently right around the extraction site. At this point, it could be advised to use a mild mouthwash or a saltwater rinse to keep the healing area clean without causing any damage to the tissue.

After two weeks, everything is nearly normal

You’re often well on your way to a full recovery by the two-week mark. Although the extraction site may feel a little uncomfortable or appear slightly tender, it shouldn’t affect your daily activities anymore. Although a light touch around the extraction site is still advised, brushing and flossing should now be fully resumed.

If you discover that certain meals are uncomfortable, you can also resume your normal diet, excluding items that are extremely tough, sticky, or crunchy.

Maintaining proper oral hygiene and being hydrated is still crucial to supporting full tissue regeneration because your mouth is working hard to mend entirely.

Quick Tips For An Easier Recovery

We’ve compiled a list of essential suggestions to help you stay on course for recovery:

  • Drink Plenty of Water: During the healing process, drinking plenty of water promotes tissue repair and keeps you comfortable.

  • Stick to Soft Foods: To lessen pressure on the extraction site, stay away from difficult foods, even if you feel comfortable eating them.

  • Avoid Spitting and Straws: Spitting or sucking on straws can cause blood clots to come loose and impede the healing process.

  • Maintain Good Hygiene: Without upsetting the sensitive tissue, salt water rinses and light brushing close to the extraction site can help avoid infection.
