Braces treatment is required when there is a misaligned tooth which is causing aesthetic or
functional issues to patient. Conventional braces treatment is done by using metallic wires to
move the teeth in desired position. Latest technology has greatly improved the way to go for
teeth alignment. Invisalign or commonly referred to as invisible braces, which actually are set of
plastic trays prefabricated to move the teeth in desired position. These trays can be be removed
during eating and brushing.
Now the question arise that why do we need to remove permanent teeth for braces ?
The tooth generally removed in orthodontic treatment is first premolars. But any other tooth
can also be removed as the case merits. Permanent tooth is to be removed when there is
excessive crowding of teeth , which states that there is in sufficient space in oral cavity for all
the teeth to erupt normally in their respective places. Excessive crowding or misalignment can
also be due to constricted jaws. In such cases few permanent should be removed to create
space to move other teeth into desired spaces made available by removing few permanent
teeth.
Why premolars are usually extracted ?
Extraction of premolars does not result in compromise of aesthetics and or function in any way.
That is the main reason to extract the premolars when an orthodontic treatment is planned.
Conclusion:
Most common reasons to extract a tooth for braces treatment are:
1. Too many teeth resulting in crowding
2. Jaw too small to support all healthy teeth
3. tooth too big or any specific tooth too big or abnormally shaped.
