Dental crowns are mainly of two types. One consists of a base layer as a metal over which ceramic is layered. Other being totally metal-free. Metal-free crowns are known as zirconia crowns as they are made of the element zirconium.
Types of crowns:
1. PFM:
These crowns are Porcelain fused to metal crowns. It has a base layer as metal over which ceramic can be layered. These crowns are usually given in high-stress areas. But the ceramic layered over metal can get chipped over a period of time leading to the unaesthetic display of metal.
2. ZIRCONIA CROWNS:
Zirconia crowns are metal-free. But they have high strength and excellent aesthetics. Being metal free they are very safe during MRI and CT scan procedures. Highly indicated in smile designing procedures.
3. ALL METAL CROWNS:
These are all metal crowns made of stainless steel or cobalt-chromium. Since these crowns are less costly so indicated in patients who cannot afford to pay much for the procedure. These crowns are highly conspicuous so not indicated in the smile zone.
