Porcelain fused to metal
What is Porcelain fused to metal?
Porcelain fused to Metal crowns or the PFM crowns are nothing but metal crowns that have a layer of a tooth coloured material (porcelain) fused to it. They almost look like natural teeth, have an excellent fit and have a good strength because of the metal base. This makes them highly acceptable by the patients.
When does one need this?
When a patient has a missing tooth or a few missing teeth and desires a bridge for the replacement of them, he/she can go for a porcelain fused to metal brigde that offers both strength and natural look. Even the teeth that have been root canal treated and need a crown, porcelain fused to metal crowns can be used. Aesthetically, this crown is quite superior and widely acceptable.
How long does it take?
To place the crown, 2 appointments are enough. One for taking the impression and one for cementing the crown/bridge. Sometimes, an extra appointment might be needed for a trial of the crown/bridge.
Are there any alternatives?
Other alternatives can be Zirconia crowns or Metal Layer Sintered crowns.
