Gummy smile correction
What is gummy smile correction?
In certain individuals, a portion of their gums in the upper jaw is visible in the relaxed state or when they smile. This ‘gummy smile’ can be treated by removing a portion of the gums (gingivectomy) and giving crowns to the patients (if required) hence enhancing their smile and appearance.
When does one need it?
When the patient has a gummy smile and the surgical approach is either contraindicated or not acceptable to the patient, this treatment option is used.
How long does it take?
The first appointment is gingivectomy which is followed by a healing period of around 2 weeks (varies depending on the medical condition of the patient). This is followed by 2 more appointments for the crowns (if required) so a total of 1-3 appointments are required for this treatment procedure.
Are there any alternatives?
Corrective jaw surgery can be done only after the assessment of the patient and seeing the possibility of the same.
