Jaw cysts are sack-like pouches that fill with fluid and form within the tissues of the jaw. It can develop either in the upper or lower jaw bone and can potentially affect anyone across all age ranges. These growths are usually noncancerous. They can be aggressive and expand, displace or destroy the surrounding bone, tissue and teeth. They tend to grow very slowly and in many patients, they are asymptomatic.
Common cause of dental cyst
Most dental cysts form because of infection coming from a tooth which is broken or bad. Another type of cyst forms in the covering that is found around buried teeth. Some cysts are formed by the cells which originally formed your teeth.
Treatment of jaw tumors and cysts generally involves surgical care. The frequently practiced surgical treatments are:-
Enucleation or curettage is the most commonly used surgical treatment. The outcome for the small cysts is usually satisfactory after simple operation, but the patients with large cystic growth present with some risk of the fracture and a higher incidence of recurrence.
Enucleation is a surgical technique, which requires the complete removal of the cyst sac without bone removal
Curettage is a method in which the wall of the cyst cavity is surgically scraped and its contents removed.
Marsupialization or conventional decompression:
The procedure involves removal of cyst with the smallest possible opening to reduce the pressure within the cystic lesion and with placement of tubing to maintain the drainage. The merit of this procedure is to minimize the risk of damage to vital structures, thereby making it useful in young or older patients who are medically compromised.
Apicoectomy
An apicoectomy is a dental surgical procedure where cystic growth and the end of the root of tooth is removed while the top of your tooth is left in place.
It’s often called a root-end surgery because it works on the tip of your root .
The procedure is usually recommended when a standard root canal treatment isn’t sufficient to save the tooth from cystic growth.
